OSDP should be the standard!

Many access control readers are still connected via Wiegand. This is an unencrypted connection, while a much safer alternative is available: OSDP. The OSDP protocol is standardized, uses AES-128 encryption, and allows multiple readers to be connected to a single RS-485 bus.

Alphatronics is adding new access control readers to its range and is deliberately opting for an extensive line of OSDP readers.

“It’s strange that access control readers are still being installed on the outside of buildings while communication to the inside takes place over an unencrypted connection,” says Jos Herrebrugh, CEO of Alphatronics. “Even when the reader is part of a certified intrusion detection system, we still see Wiegand readers being used. So inside you have a Grade 3 installation fitted with all the required certifications, while outside there’s a reader that can be eavesdropped on or tampered with. That’s why we’re investing heavily in OSDP,” Herrebrugh continues. “At this moment, it’s the most secure connection, preventing tampering and increasing safety.”

FireSafety & Security Event
During the FireSafety & Security Event on 15 and 16 April, we will be presenting a new line of UNii access control readers, which are of course available in an OSDP version. In addition, we have set ourselves the goal of raising market awareness about the risks of Wiegand and the benefits of OSDP.
